Hocking Hills Spring Workshop
April 19, 2023

This workshop takes place in Hocking Hills State Park, located in Southeastern Ohio. Located a little over an hour from Columbus, Hocking Hills State Park is a fantastic landscape photography destination for midwestern landscape photographers. Home to numerous hiking trails, waterfalls, rock formations, and cliffs, there are many photography subjects.

This spring workshop focuses on some of the premier waterfalls within the park. We will discuss basic camera usage, creative use of camera settings to influence exposure and depth of field, and composition and telling a story with your image. During lunch, I will do a high-level overview of post-processing your images.

I typically do a short period of group instruction at each waterfall, then we split up at the waterfall to allow you to start photographing and practicing, during which I will come by and work with you individually.

This is a one-day workshop. I intentionally choose a weekday to help minimize the number of crowds we will encounter. Due to the popularity of the park it can get crowded later in the day.

Itinerary

The itinerary is subject to change based on conditions and other factors.

  • 7am - Meet in Hocking Hills

  • 7:15am to 10:45am - Visit two waterfalls in the morning, discussing various photography topics

  • 11am to 12:30pm - Pickup lunch and picnic at Old Man’s Cave Area

  • 12:30pm to 3pm - Visit two more waterfalls, practicing what we learned earlier in the day

Fitness:

Easy to Moderate
None of the hikes are super long, certain areas do have a large number of steep steps - up and down. When carrying a heavy camera bag, this can be a moderately strenuous activity. Some trails can be slippery if it is wet or damp out. Participants should be comfortable with this level of activity before registering for the workshop.

Weather

Spring in Ohio is unpredictable in regard to weather! This workshop will be held rain or shine. Due to this, please plan on dressing appropriately for the weather. I recommend a layered approach to clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and rain gear.

Lodging

This is a one-day workshop, but due to the early start, attendees might find it helpful to stay in the Hocking Hills area the night before. (I tend to camp out at the Hocking Hills Campground the night before).

Here are some places to consider staying the night before.
